Andrew & I strolled over to the Living Room Theater Monday night for "Cold Weather," the latest micro-budget indie from Portland's own Aaron Katz. I usually stay away from baby auteurs with tiny budgets but I'm happy to report Katz is an exception to the rule. (Also I should break this rule more often.) I haven't seen any of his other movies but I am much more likely to now. Movies are only $5 on Mondays & Tuesdays at Living Room, a cozy downtown hotspot with a sleek bar, full dinner menu and six screens that play a unique variety of independent & mainstream fare. Next to "Cold Weather" were screens showing Fox Tower hand-me-down "Blue Valentine" (excellent), the luridly appealing South Korean import "The Housemaid" (we all know I'm a sucker for erotic thrillers), and Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher as fuck buddies in "No Strings Attached."
The actress Trieste Kelly-Dunn plays the sister, Gale, and you can't take your eyes off her when she's on screen. The best thing about "Cold Weather," which features lots of spans with no dialogue that contemplate clouds and such, is its cinematography. There are shots of the bridge at Multnomah Falls and the corner of NE 28th/Glisan (the cluster of vibrantly-colored corner buildings that includes Pambiché) that rank among the best I've ever seen.
Go see "Cold Weather" at Living Room Theaters; you'll be glad you did. The ending is sly and sudden but also sort of funny. It has stayed with me for days.
