For most people it feels like Becca sort of blew up overnight after they collaborated with Jaclyn Hill on Champagne Pop. Even though I am not the biggest fan of Jaclyn, Becca have a lot to thank her for as realistically she put them on the map. The first product I actually tried from Becca was an eye shadow palette which I actually still have, it was the Ombre Nudes Palette. However Champagne Pop will always be the stand out product from the Becca line up for so many people. Other than these two products, I haven't tried many products from Becca. When I saw the Macaron Set, I saw it as a great opportunity to expand on my Becca highlight collection but not to have too many of the large compacts that the highlighters traditionally come in. Not only that but this set contained a couple of the highlight shade I had been wanting to try from the brand. I actually bought this set back in October so I have had quite a long time to test this set out and to consider if it is truly worth it because this set was not cheap at £45.
Becca are incredibly well known for the formula of their highlighters and for good reason. The formula is absolutely incredible; they are so buttery and smooth but incredibly pigmented. The powders are really finely milled which makes them so smooth and allows them to create the most beautiful highlight on your cheek opposed to a glitter. The one problem with this formula is that the powder isn't tightly pressed; good for anyone who wants a good pigment but bad if you want to travel with a Becca highlight. Literally everyone I know who has travelled with a Becca highlight has broken it and it is one of the most heartbreaking beauty mishaps. Plus these are not cheap so it is super frustrating. Since buying the Macaron set and using the highlights one of mine has already broken. It wasn't even in my makeup bag. For some unknown reason it was upside down on my dresser and the entire product had come out. Luckily I managed to get it back in the pan but now I know that one shade has to sit on my dresser and the travel size is just as likely to break as the larger pans.
A full size compact will set you back £30, in comparison this set is £45. As Christmas sets go this is relatively expensive considering you only get one type of product in it. These highlighters are the same size as the mini highlighters that Becca sell all year round but 2 of these shades are exclusive to this set. These are 2.4g each which is quite a lot smaller than the 8g you get in the full size. However I've always found the full size to be way too big. I use such a small amount of highlight whenever I use it, especially because you do not need to use much of the Becca highlights, so I feel like these are a better size and they are something you might actually use up. The mini highlights are £15 each so when you buy this set you are basically getting one for free. When you look at it like that it makes this set seem more reasonable but it is dependent on whether or not you like all of shades.
This set basically contains every colour you could ever need and will go with every makeup look you are trying to create. The shade that excited me the most in this set was Opal. I had heard about Opal a lot as I follow Jamie Genevieve who speaks about it all the time and regularly uses it in her tutorials. I had always wanted to know how it would look on my ultra-pale skin. I had been thinking about buying the full size so when I saw this set I knew it would give me the perfect opportunity to try it and not be massively committed. Turns out this is actually my favourite from the set and probably my favourite Becca highlight I have owned. I've always found Champagne Pop only really looks OK on me during the Summer when I have a bit of a tan because it is such a gold based highlight but Opal is more silver based which suits my skin tone a little bit more for the rest of the year. Opal is described as 'a universally flattering neutral white gold with soft pink pearl,' I have to say I just get a massive amount of the white gold which actually works great on my skin. I was dubious at first but it actually works. I have been wearing this as a base shade for the Fenty Beauty How Many Carats?! Diamond Bomb Highlight and this duo has been perfect as we have moved into the festive season. This highlight and a red lip are a perfect combo.
The next shade is Vanilla Quartz which was another shade I had been thinking about trying. For a while I had been thinking that Champagne Pop is too dark for me and looking online Vanilla Quartz looked like a good option as an alternative for paler skin. In all of the pictures I had seen online, this looked like a creamy soft gold/white shade, 10x lighter than Champagne Pop. In the description of this shade it says, 'A light gold infused with pink pearl.' Compared to Opal this has a really strong pink pearl within it which I couldn't really see in the pictures online. This does make it slightly warmer but I do really like this shade, I do think it suits me more when I haven't fake tanned so at this time of year. I am glad that I did not commit myself to the full size. If you are too pale for Champagne Pop and you are looking for a pale gold alternative, this would be a good one to look into.
There was one shade in this set that I had never seen before which was Rose Quartz. I have never seen any of the bloggers I follow talk about this or even seen the shade online but this is basically the inversion of Vanilla Quartz. On the John Lewis website they describe this shade as 'A neutral pale pink with soft gold pearl.' As I said basically the opposite of Vanilla Quartz, this has a strong pale rose tone but it has subtle gold tones within this rose. At first I did not use this as much as the other two I've already spoken about. I didn't think that the strong pale pink tone would go with a lot of gold and rust colours that I like for this time of year however I have been loving this highlight when I use the Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in Rose Gold. This is the perfect highlight to go with that eye look and I have actually been pairing Rose Quartz with a bit of Benefit Dandelion Twinkle but I feel like this will come into its own during Spring when I bring out the pale pinks and cooler toned shadows.
The final shade is Prismatic Amethyst which I actually featured in a New In Wishlist back in March last year which was when the whole holographic trend was really big. This highlight wasn't exactly part of the holographic trend, it is more of a duo-chrome but I really wanted to give this a go. Whereas the other shades are only really a mix of two shades, Prismatic Amethyst contains a whole bunch of tones. 'A pale lavender with gold, violet and rose duo-chrome pearls.' Because this is a soft violet/rose rather than being gold based, I find this isn't all that wearable every day. I love this sort of shade and I think it looks beautiful on tanned skin but I cannot find the right time to wear this. I actually think this is a great one to incorporate into an eye look instead of being boldly used on your cheek. Much like Vanilla Quartz I like that I own this but I am really glad it is in a smaller size as I would never get through a full size of this.
If you couldn't tell this set was literally perfect for me as I had been wanting to buy 3 shades which featured in this set. I really love this set and I've got so much use out of it since I bought it back in October. I think this set is absolutely perfect for anyone who loves Becca highlights or highlight in general. If you know someone is looking to build up their collection, this is an amazing set. This is a John Lewis exclusive, in case you are interested in it but can't seem to find this set anywhere. This could be a good last minute gift, here is a link to the set, not an affiliate link, just trying to be helpful: John Lewis: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter Macaron Kit
